The confusing multitude of requirements, regulations, and standards proliferating throughout the construction industry make it difficult to obtain clear measurements of how prospective supply chain companies are currently performing. Three key indicators are the systematic approach a company has taken in relation to quality, environmental, and health and safety systems for controlling its activities within the industry. These three systems of management have been subjected to concerted efforts of the worlds leading national standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist consultancies, producing detailed specifications for the design standards of each of the systems. The three top-of-the- line standards produced, operate independently but are designed in a compatible manner in order to facilitate their integration with each other. The three standards are designated: ISO 9001 Quality Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management, OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management.

The roots of total quality management can be traced to early 1920’s production quality control ideas notably pioneered by the concepts of Japanese and American management guru’s developed in the late 1940’s early 1950’s, and expanded on a global scale in the 1970-80’s. Total quality management is central to the relationship between customer and supplier. It requires the right organisational structure and commitment to quality from people, processes, and systems in the organisation. An effective quality management system requires a set of coordinated activities to direct and control an organisation in order to continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its performance. SV Electrics manages the quality of the performance of its activities within the construction industry through conformity to the quality management system ISO 9001.

In the last 25 years the importance of the future condition of the world's environment has come to the forefront of global political thinking. Increasing environmentally related legalisation downloads a burden of environmental responsibility into the workplace. The UK has had its own environmental management system (EMS) standard: BS 7750 since 1992, now superseded by the ISO 14000 series. The variation of ISO 14000 standards and information related to environmental management can cause confusion about how best to apply procedures from different environmental management systems within the series to create a comprehensive but relevant policy manual and audit plan. SV Electrics have solved this problem by cataloguing copies of all standards within the series. We maintain an objective understanding of environmental aspects and their impacts, so that we conduct all of our activities in an environmentally responsible manner and continue to promote environmental awareness and performance through conformity to the environmental management system ISO 14001.

Environments containing electrical energy can be extremely hazardous to the health and safety of persons and property. By law precautions must be taken against risk of death or personal injury from electricity in work activities. SV Electrics recognises as a minimum requirement that our staff and those we conduct our business with, must be ensured a healthy and safe environment in which to work. We consider statutory regulations and codes of practice relating to health and welfare to provide a minimum standard only, and we strive to constantly improve those standard's through nationally or internationally recognised health and safety schemes. On a national level we achieve this benchmark by compliance to the highest standard of “accredited” status with the contractors health and safety assessment scheme (CHAS), supported by the health and safety executive (HSE), the principle enforcement agency for health and safety in the UK. On an International level, we achieve this benchmark by conformity to the Health and Safety Management system OHSAS 18001.
